* 1.
* This file is best printed in landscape in 8-point Courier New or equivalent.
*
* 2.
* Numbers in <> refer to the IDs of other people in the tree.
*
* 3.
* All exact dates are either in the UK date format - DD/MM/YYYY, eg. 14/03/1988 or 04/01/1988,
* or in the genealogical standard date format - D MMM YYYY eg. 14 MAR 1988 or 4 JAN 1988.
* Prior to 1752, New Years Day was 25th March (Lady Day), from 1752 NYD changed to the
* 1st January we know. Dates before 1752 with a '(L)' following them, eg. 04/01/1724(L) or 4 JAN 1724(L),
* are of the old style, while dates with a '(N)' following them, eg. 04/01/1725(N) or 4 JAN 1725(N),
* are of the new Gregorian style (if before 1752 they have been pre-converted).
* They may be written as 04/01/1724(L)1725(N) recording both forms.
* If it is not known which new year system a date uses, it may be written 04/01/1724(X)
* (meaning that if the date in the source data, written 1724, was in the old system, then it is 1725 converted
* to the new, but if it was already converted to the new system then it remains 1724.)
* Dates in or after 1752 with no indication of the date system used may be reasonably assumed to be of the new form.
* Dates before 1752 with no indication of the date system used may be reasonably assumed to be of the old form.
* Also, note that in September 1752, 10 days were dropped in conversion/synchronisation to the
* Gregorian calendar, such that the day after 02/09/1752 was 14/09/1752 - be careful with the year 1752!
*
* 4.
* Approximate dates (usually derived from ages on censues) are written c{nnnn}, eg. c1870.
* Approximate dates from census ages are usually accurate +/- 2 years, providing that the person knew how
* old they were and that they didn't lie!
*
* 5.

* The "Position" field is denoted as:
* the initial 0 is me (Ian Ward <1>)
* additional zeros on the right denote a persons father
* additional ones on the right denote a persons mother
* a # denotes a sibling
* a * denotes marriage
* a ^ denotes offspring
* eg. I (Ian Ward <1>) am 0
* My sister is 0#
* My father is 00
* My mother is 01
* My uncle on my mothers side is my mothers brother, or 01#
* My paternal grandfather is 000
* My paternal grandmother is 001
* My maternal grandmother is 011
* My maternal grandfather is 010
* My grandfather (on my mothers side) second marriage is 010*
* The offspring of that second marriage are 010*^
* Position numbers that are wholely numeric are actually similar to an 'ahnentafel' number
* (type it into your favourite search engine for a description of what that means, if you don't know).
* To convert these to an ahnentafel, change the leading '0' to a '1', treat the resulting number as
* being in binary and convert it to decimal. Ahnentafels with a base descendant other than myself
* can also be calculated relatively easily from these Position numbers with a little coding.
*
* 7.
* Generation numbers are organised as follows:
* I (Ian Ward <1>) am generation 0, the base generation for this tree. So are my sister and first cousins.
* Past generations before mine are negative, so my mum and dad are gen -1, my grandparents -2, etc.
* Younger generations are positive, so my children will be generation +1, their children +2, etc.

Booth Michael (michael2002york@yahoo.co.uk) says on Mervyn and Joyce:
On Wed, 10 Sep 2003 18:43:10 +0100 (BST), Booth Michael wrote:

Yep, Mervyn Pillinger was general manager of Booth and Fisher's and
was my dad's first cousin. His mother was my great-aunt, Hilda
Booth, sister of the founders of Booth and Fisher. She married
Frank Pillinger, father of Mervyn and, I think, Raymond.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Also relating into the tree, and connected with the Wards, are Susan and Alan (Green?),
with daughter Nicole. It is unclear yet how they relate in, however.
In 1912, Bernard Ward <<90>> wrote a letter (on paper headed "Bernard Ward", "BERNARD WARD, HOG SALESMAN, 26, CHARNWOOD STREET, DERBY.")
dated 12/06/1912 to 'Jack' (actually John <45>).
It contains a statement that 'Jack' is married, and an implication that 'Jack' has a nine month old daughter:
"glad to hear that you are happily married + comfortable.
she is a bonny girl of nine months. should think you are both proud of her"

as a Gas Engineer. The place of birth is stated as the residence of the family
(Thomas <9> and Beatrice <8>) at Shirley Road, Rushden.
Greville:
With regard to my mother ...
Born on 04/12/1912, her mother, Beatrice May Philips, died 11 days after her
birth, on 15th Dec. Beatrice Margaret was brought up by her aunts --
sisters of her father Harry Knapton. There were 3 sisters (but I only knew
2 of them), but how soon after the death of Beatrice May they took the
responsibility, and whether it was a legal adoption, I do not know.
I saw my grandfather Harry on only a few occasions. I remember him visiting
his sisters on one occasion, but he lived in Aston, Birmingham, with his
second wife Beatrice Maud Hanley, where he had an engineering business, and
we visited I suppose a couple of times from Rushden and slept on a mattress
on the floor in the bedrooms over the shop. (Funny how Harry seemed to like
the name 'Beatrice M' !!).
From Greville (07/08/2003):
Nothing spectacular [from birth certificate] on Beatrice Margaret Knapton -
Born at 10 Victoria Gardens, Horsforth
Her father (Harry) is shown residing at Beck Bottom, Farsley - the family home no doubt.
--
"Confirmed" on 10th April 1930 at Farsley Parish Church
[from certificate in front of confirmation book given to her on the day by the vicar]
On 14/01/2004, on Hugh Knaptons advice, I ordered the birth certificate of a Dennis Marshall Knapton, born 1921.
Registration district North Bierley
1921 birth in the sub-disrtrict of Pudsey in the county of Yorks (W.R.)
Name: Dennis Marshall
Born: First July 1921 (the word Eleventh was written, but crossed out, and there
is also the number 10 seems to have been written between the word First
and the crossed out Eleventh, whatever that may mean)
39 New Street, Pudsey
Sex: Boy
Father: Harry Knapton, Draughtsman (Electrical Engineer)
Mother: Beatrice Maud Knapton formerly Hawley
Informant: Harry Knapton, Father, 36 New Street, Pudsey
(note the different house number to where Dennis was born, they definitely
say 39 and 36 respectively)
Registered: Eleventh July 1921
Registrar: H.Halliday, deputy registrar
(*all* other certs I've seen have said 'Registrar' rather than 'Deputy', so
this is interesting in itself to me :o)
I immediately noticed Harry and Beatrice Knapton here and wondered if he was
related to the Harry Knapton in my tree. At first I discounted it, but then
realised two things: (i) the name Marshall would be something of a coincidence,
and (ii) that Beatrice May Phillips, my great-grandmother and wife of my Harry
Knapton, died in 1912. That means that Harry could easily have re-married to
Beatrice Maud Hawley by 1921. I also know from Harry's marriage to my
great-grandmother that he was a draughtsman. He didn't die until 1953.
I also know he had a prediliction for 'Beatrice M's - he married Beatrice May
Phillips in 1911, and named my grandmother Beatrice Margaret. It wouldn't surprise
me if he later re-married a Beatrice Maud... There seem to be too many
coincidences here to write off - Dennis could be [is, according to greville]
my grandmothers half-brother!

From Greville: Birth Certificate Reference: Calv/20/450
It appears from Grevilles entry in GenesConnected, that Harry also married a
Beatrice Maud Hanley, born 1885 in Birmingham(?).
Greville:
I saw my grandfather Harry on only a few occasions. I remember him visiting
his sisters on one occasion, but he lived in Aston, Birmingham, with his
second wife Beatrice Maud Hanley, where he had an engineering business, and
we visited I suppose a couple of times from Rushden and slept on a mattress
on the floor in the bedrooms over the shop. (Funny how Harry seemed to like
the name 'Beatrice M' !!).
From Greville (07/08/2003):
Neither is there anything new on Harry Knapton -
Born at Beck Bottom, Farsley
From Greville (07/08/2003):
The Certificate for John Marshall Knapton shows
That he was born at Angel Yard, Mercy Street (that will be West Leeds)
And his father was John Knapton (a Spinner) and his mother Hannah Knapton, formerly Wilson.
This confirms the information I had found about John and Hannah Knapton in the 1881 Census
When Grandson Francis (Gladstone) aged 13 was at their house in Bramley.
That also confirms that John Marshall had (at least) two brothers.
From Greville (07/08/2003):
With regards to Gladstone - his is the Certificate that the Registrar did not send.
Reason being that the name of his mother did not correspond to the one (Emma) that was on my application.
This lends to confirm that he was born before John & Emma married.
I am concluding that John was his father - but was John married before?
I rather think he may have been - more detective work.
I'll keep you posted.
Grevile (18/09/2003):
I've finally managed to get some info on the above-named [Francis Gladstone KNAPTON].
You will recall that he appeared in the 1881 Census in Stanningley aged 13 and then in the 1901 Census in Farsley
aged 33 but that I had failed to get a birth certificate from Leeds.
I applied for one from the GRO and it arrived yesterday.
It shows his DOB as 20th June 1867.
Parents: John Marshall Knapton & Frances Knapton, formerly Bennett (deceased).
The birth was registered on 22nd July 1867, so Frances presumably died fairly soon after giving birth to young Francis G.
In due course I hope to get their Marriage certificate and Frances's Death cert.

There seem to be too many
coincidences here to write off - Dennis could be my grandmothers half-brother!

Greville (26/01/2004):
I note you have Ethel KNAPTON married to James PEARSON.
I've got a bit more on them:
His full name is James Overend PEARSON
Children: 1. Emma Overend PEARSON
Married: George Emmanuel MANNING
Children: 1. John Overend MANNING
2. Gordon Overend MANNING
2. John Overend PEARSON
Married: Mabel BOOCOCK
Children: 1. Enid Overend PEARSON
2. Stephen PEARSON
3. James Overend PEARSON
Married: Irene
Children: 1. David
4. Ben Overend PEARSON
Sorry absolutely no dates.
Seem determined to continue the name 'Overend'. Believe it was a distant
maiden name way back -- strongly suspect that 'Marshall' in the KNAPTONs may
be a similar origin.
Nanna Watson [Beatrice <8>] used to visit Emma when she lived in Hounslow.
She used to talk about her house on 'The Great West Road' which, I think would
be the A4.

Greville on Ethel Knapton (09/02/2004) :
Further to my recent email in which I put some GRO Reference details to
Sylvia, Dennis and Phyllis and their families, I have been searching around
on 1837online for Ethel KNAPTON and James PEARSON's family, and am pleased
to pass on the following Registration Details:
Ethel KNAPTON / James Overend PEARSON - m. 2Q 1912, District: N.Bierley,
Vol. 9b Page 44.
Emma Overend PEARSON - birth registered 2Q 1913, N.Bierley, 9b 123.
Married G.E.MANNING - m. 4Q 1939, Brentford, 3a 1435.
Child 1. John Overend MANNING - (Registration shows middle initial as 'S' -
not 'O'??) b. 3Q 1944, Brentford, 3a 376.
Child 2. Gordon Overend MANNING - (Reg. shows middle initial as 'E' or it
might be 'B' - not 'O'??) b. 2Q 1949, Ealing, 5e 245.
John Overend PEARSON - birth registered 3Q 1916, N.Bierley, 9b 115.
Married Mabel BOOCOCK - m. 3Q 1941, Wharfdale, 9a 461.
Child 1. Enid Overend PEARSON - b. 2Q 1942, Wharfdale, 9a 448.
Child 2. Stephen O. (probably Overend?) PEARSON - b. 2Q 1947, Wharfdale,
2d 1129.
James Overend PEARSON - birth registered 3Q 1918, N.Bierley, 9b 96.
Married Irene (HODGSON apparently) - m. 3Q 1941, Leeds, 9b 545.
Child 1. David O. (probably Overend?) PEARSON - b. 3Q 1942, Wharfdale, 9a
276.
Ben Overend PEARSON - birth registered 1Q 1921, N.Bierley, 9b 113.
Notes:
I'm sure I've identified all the correct people in the Index.
Strange that the middle initials of John and Gordon MANNING are not recorded
as 'O' for Overend. It was something I particularly remember my mother
telling me about. The Birth Certificates would confirm.

Greville(26/04/2004) :
Florence never married either [as with Lizzie].
Lizzie and Florence lived together at 'Ellesmere', 12 Old Road, Farsley, and
that's where they brought up my mother (Beatrice Margaret).
